Problem-based learning in higher education: a bibliometric analysis
Abstract
Problem-Based Learning is an educational methodology used in higher education aimed at improving student learning, working in small groups, in real or hypothetical scenarios supervised by a tutor. The aim was to analyze the worldwide scientific production related to problem-based learning in higher education. A bibliographic search was conducted in SCOPUS, and bibliometric indicators of production, visibility, impact and collaboration were analyzed. The scientific production maintained an exponential growth of documents until 2018, concentrated in the field of social studies and medicine, in addition, most journals are located in the upper quartiles; the author with more publications was Servant-Miklos and the most cited article was “Critical thinking, transformative learning, sustainable education, and problem-based learning in universities”; the most productive country is the United States; the keywords with more occurrences were “Problem-based learning”, “higher education”, “education”, “curriculum” and PBL.
