The Role of Civil Society in Media Governance: the case of Internet
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to discuss the existence of global media governance and to present its characteristics, the main social actors involved in this governance and the role of civil society. To do so, we present as an example the already known internet governance, including its history and the power arrangements that social actors make up for the network to succeed. As main findings we point out that there is a global media governance marked mainly by the strong power of the so-called developed countries and multinational private companies. Civil society, while playing the role of resistance, has challenges in this arena to become a decisive actor in decision-making or even in the ability to influence other actors.
